May 3, 2025, has been declared a public holiday.

Singaporeans will go to the polls to vote on a Saturday for the upcoming general election.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in an Apr. 15 press statement that the day should be treated in the same manner as any other public holiday.

Employee entitlements

An employee is entitled to an extra day’s salary for the day’s work, or be given a day off if required to work on a public holiday.

All employees covered by the Employment Act are entitled to paid public holidays, MOM said.

The employee is entitled to either a day off or salary in lieu if Polling Day is a non-working day.

The day off is not by default the next Monday, May 5 and should be discussed between employers and employees.

Employers also have the option to grant time off in lieu, should employees work on the public holiday.

This applies to workmen, or manual labourers, earning more than S$4,500 a month, non-workmen earning more than S$2,600 a month, as well as all managers and executives.

More information on public holiday provisions under the Employment Act can be found on MOM’s website.
