Inferno
On the morning of Apr. 1, residents of Subang, Selangor, looked out to find a towering fire extending high into the sky.
The fire emitted a low roar that could be heard far from kilometres away.
The Malay Mail reported that the cause was a gas pipeline fire in Jalan Putra Harmoni, Putra Heights.
The assistant director of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, was quoted as saying that they received a distress call at 8.10 am.
Firefighters reached the scene of the fire 12 minutes later and found that the fire was emanating from a leaking gas pipeline, with an estimated 500 meters of pipeline aflame.
The Mail further reported that 41 emergency personnel, fire engines, emergency medical response vehicles, water tankers, and a hazardous materials unit had been deployed.
The firefighters were deployed from at least nine fire stations in the surrounding area.
Evacuations
Videos and pictures of the fire were shared extensively on social media.
One showed emergency personnel in a residential district close to the fire opening a gate for residents to evacuate.
The video showed that the neighbourhood was extremely close to one part of the fire, with many houses closer to the fire.
Footage taken from further afield showed the fire towering above residential apartments in the foreground, suggesting a height of about 20 stories.
At time of writing, efforts to contain the fire are ongoing.Top image via Jun Yeong/Facebook, Ting Wei Yao/Facebook, Sam Low/Facebook
