Girl, 5, trapped in GetGo car in Woodlands after door locks couldn't be opened from inside or remotely

A five-year-old girl was stuck inside a GetGo rental car for about 20 minutes at around 11pm on Apr. 25 in Woodlands.

What happened

The child's mother Rasyidah Roslan had unlocked the GetGo car using her smartphone app and asked her daughter to enter the backseat, before closing the door.

Rasyidah's son followed her husband and she walked over to the driver's seat.

But then she discovered that all the doors were locked.

Rasyidah and her husband tried to open all the doors to no avail and could not unlock them using the app.

All she got was an error message.

In an Apr. 26 Facebook post, the mother wrote: "GetGo car locked itself right after I put my daughter inside. Trapping my daughter in the car."

According to Shin Min Daily News, the girl in the car was crying and Rasyidah had to calm her down while getting in touch with the GetGo customer service at the same time.

SCDF responded to incident

Rasyidah managed to reach GetGo, but the car still could not be unlocked remotely by its personnel.

GetGo said it would send a personnel over, but it would take 45 minutes.

After 20 minutes of trying to unlock the car, Rasyidah decided to call the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

The SCDF pried the driver's door open and freed the girl.

The girl appeared shaken and her eyes were red and swollen from crying.

However, she managed to respond with a nod when asked if she was alright.

GetGo response

GetGO told Shin Min that it was the first time such an incident had occurred.

The company was investigating the malfunctioning locking system.

The affected vehicle has been removed from service.

The company added that it would review its protocol to improve its response to emergency situations.

GetGO said the customer was not liable for the damages.
