Tanah Merah site to be studied for potential development of new funeral services & columbarium complex
The new complex intends to meet anticipated demand for after-death facilities.
A site at Tanah Merah Coast Road has been identified by the government as another possible site to be studied for the potential development of a new funeral services and columbarium complex.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Tanah Merah Coast Road site was identified after consultations with other agencies on factors such as readiness for development and traffic impact.

NEA is working with the agencies to assess the new site's suitability further and conduct a technical feasibility study.
Environmental studies on the suitability of the Mandai Avenue site to be developed are ongoing, said NEA.
A decision on where the new funeral services and columbarium complex is to be located will be made after both studies of the Mandai Avenue and Tanah Merah Coast Road sites are completed.
To meet demand
In December 2023, NEA stated that the new complex intends to meet anticipated demand for after-death facilities.
"With the number of resident deaths projected to increase, demand for wake spaces, columbaria niches and the management of remains is expected to increase in tandem. The government is planning ahead for such essential facilities, while balancing competing land use needs."
NEA added that columbaria are an essential component of the after-death.
Of the government-operated columbaria, Yishun Columbarium is at full capacity while Mandai Columbarium is near its capacity.
