The elderly man who allegedly slapped a 21-year-old non-Muslim man in Johor Bahru for eating during the month of Ramadan will be charged on Mar. 19.
A clip of the incident, which was believed to have happened a few days prior, was shared by the victim on X, formerly known as Twitter.
According to Johor Bahru Northern District police, the elderly man is a 65-year-old Malaysian with no criminal record.
If convicted, he may be sentenced to a maximum of one year in jail, fined up to RM2,000 (almost S$600), or both.
What happened
According to the 21-year-old man, who identified himself as Elijah, the incident occurred at a convenience store while he was eating.
Elijah said he was confronted by an elderly man who asked if he was Chinese.
When Elijah said yes, the man asked to see his MyKad (Malaysia's equivalent of the NRIC).
The man subsequently asked Elijah if he was Muslim or non-Muslim.
The older man then became angry, scolded the young man, and slapped him several times.
The elderly man's son subsequently apologised on behalf of his father.
However, Elijah said that while he accepted the apology, he could not leave the incident unreported.
