Thai man, 37, jailed & fined for urinating in MRT cabin in front of commuters while drunk
He was sentenced to a week's imprisonment and fined S$2,000.
After drinking a bottle of red wine in Somerset, a 37-year-old Thai national made his way home by boarding a relatively crowded train towards Jurong East MRT station at around 8pm on Jan. 25, 2025.
However, approximately 12 minutes later, the man, Meksuwan Suwapit, shocked other passengers onboard by unzipping his pants, exposing his genitals in front of them, and urinating in the train cabin.
While several passengers moved away from Meksuwan and the puddle of urine on the ground, some commuters who did not notice his deed ended up stepping on his urine.
As the train was moving, the puddle of urine spread even further on the ground, causing a mess and annoyance to passengers.
After a passenger who witnessed Meksuwan's deeds notified police officers on patrol at around 8:35pm, Meksuwan was brought out of the train and placed under arrest.
On Mar. 18, Meksuwan was sentenced to a week in jail and fined S$2,000.
Urinated on train while drunk
According to court documents seen by Mothership, Meksuwan began drinking with his friends at Somerset sometime before 4:30pm on Jan. 25.
About 3.5 hours later, he boarded the train along the North-South Line, travelling from Somerset MRT station to Jurong East MRT station.
As a result, Meksuwan was drunk when he urinated in the train cabin while travelling between Ang Mo Kio MRT station and Khatib MRT station at around 8:12pm.
After the witness alerted police officers on patrol, the train Meksuwan was travelling on was intercepted at Woodlands MRT station.
He was subsequently brought to the first aid room at the station for investigations before police officers arrested him.
Promised to stay away from alcohol
On Mar. 18, Meksuwan was sentenced to a week's jail and fined S$2,000 after admitting to committing an obscene act and an act of public nuisance, reported CNA.
Another charge of appearing drunk in a public space was taken into consideration for his sentencing.
During court proceedings, Meksuwan shared that he was aware he had made "a huge mistake" and vowed to distance himself from alcohol, reported The Straits Times.
Need to deter public urination cases in public transport areas
In the prosecution's address on Meksuwan's sentence, it highlighted the need to send a signal that public urination in public transport areas "cannot be condoned".
Citing the National Environment Agency (NEA), the prosecution said an average of 600 people were fined each year for urinating or defecating in public from 2020 to 2024.
Besides Meksuwan, at least three other men were accused of urinating at MRT stations in the first month of 2025.
One of the men was Chinese national Li Guorui, 41, who was fined S$2,000 on Jan. 14 for urinating on the moving handrail of a downward-riding escalator at Outram Park MRT station while drunk.
The other cases involved two Singaporeans, Zhou Hongwei, 57, and Soo Fook Khan, 53.
Zhou was fined S$2,000 on Feb. 26 for urinating at Potong Pasir MRT station, whereas Soo's case is still in front of the court.
Soo, who was charged with urinating on the platform of Tanah Merah MRT station, will return to court on Mar. 27.
