M'sia man, 27, arrested after allegedly assaulting 52-year-old with helmet over 'misunderstanding'

A 27-year-old man in Malaysia has been arrested after a viral video of him allegedly assaulting another man with a helmet circulated online.

The incident, which left the 52-year-old victim lying on the ground, took place in Cheng, a town in Melaka on Mar. 27.

The victim later sought treatment at a hospital in Melaka and also gave a statement to the police.

The incident

Melaka Tengah police chief assistant commissioner Christopher Patit told Malaysian media that police were alerted to the matter after a 17-second video of the incident went viral on Facebook.

Patit said the video depicted a brawl at the entrance of Taman Cheng Utama on Mar. 27.

In the video, several men were standing at the side of the road, near a parked car and two motorcycles.

A man in green approached another man and hit him with a helmet, causing him to collapse to the ground.

The video has garnered more than 1.2 million views as of Mar. 31.

'Misunderstanding' on the road escalated into violence: Police

Patit said that based on preliminary investigations, the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding on the road, which escalated into a physical altercation, New Straits Times reported.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested on Mar. 29 at a police station in Klebang, Melaka, Bernama reported.

Patit said the 52-year-old victim has given a police statement and also sought medical treatment at Melaka Hospital, according to Malay Mail.

Police will be seizing the man's motorcycle, helmet and clothing worn during the incident as part of investigations.

The suspect is assisting in investigations for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon or dangerous object.
