'That's a decision for the PM to make': Grace Fu on if she will be anchor minister at new GRC
Fu said it was a "full circle" moment to have her SMC return to Jurong.
Boundary changes were expected to happen to Yuhua, seeing that the mature estate is the smallest Single-Member Constituency (SMC) and voter numbers are declining, said Grace Fu, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yuhua SMC since 2011.
Parts of Yuhua will merge with Jurong GRC, Bukit Batok SMC, and Hong Kah North SMC, following the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report released on Mar. 11.
Part of Yuhua will also be carved out to join Jurong Central SMC.
The Minister for Sustainability and the Environment spoke on the sidelines at the Rainforest Wild Asia on Mar. 12, where she officiated the opening of Singapore’s fifth wildlife park.
Possible anchor minister for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC?
When asked if Fu would become an anchor minister for the newly formed Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, she replied, "That's a decision for the Prime Minister to make."
"I hope to be able to stand if he thinks that I have something to offer in the coming election, and if I'm being fielded, I hope to stay in where I'm familiar with, and that's in Yuhua," said Fu.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was the previous anchor minister for Jurong GRC before his resignation in 2023 to run for the Presidential Elections.
Fu, who was an MP for the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the Yuhua Division in 2006, added it was a "full circle" moment to have her SMC return to Jurong.
However, she added that she was sad that part of Yuhua would join the Jurong Central Division as a newly formed SMC.
Fu reassured Yuhua residents of her "unwavering" commitment
Following the report's release on Mar. 11, Fu took to Facebook to reassure her residents that her commitment to the community remains "unwavering".
"Until the General Election is over, I will continue to watch over your interest and look after your needs in every way I can, to the best of my ability," she said.
The General Election has to be held no later than Nov. 23, 2025.
