How long would you continue to bet on the same lottery numbers without winning, in the belief that one day you'll strike the big one?

For one man in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, his persistence paid off after striking the jackpot and winning RM17.8 million (S$5.4 million).

According to a press release by Malaysian lottery company Da Ma Cai on Feb. 26, he had bet on the same set of numbers for 13 years.

Bet on car license plate number and birth date

The 38-year-old man, who was not named by the company in the press release, had reportedly bet on the numbers 6333 and 0221 since he was 25.

The numbers are from his car license plate and birthday respectively, which he had believed will bring him "good luck" one day.

On Feb. 12, he was announced the winner of the 1+3D jackpot draw at the company's Taman Sungai Besi branch in KL.

The man had spent RM552 (S$167) on his ticket, and won the lottery with the numbers 1220 and 3633, which are variations based on his car license plate number and birth date.

He had also bet on the original pair of numbers under the same ticket.

"I've always believed in my own unique numbers. It's not just luck - it's about perseverance," he said.

Plans to donate to temple for renovation works

The man, who works in the local printing industry, has plans for spending his winnings.

He shared that demand for physical collaterals such as signboards and banners has started to dip after the pandemic.

As such, he added that he also had to "reluctantly" terminate some employees in 2024.

"Now with this new found bonus, I have new hope," he said.

According to the press release, he said he plans to improve his printing technologies while "diversifying" the business to remain competitive and hopes to bring the local printing industry to a "higher level".

The man also said that he intends to donate some of his winnings to a temple in his hometown which he frequented for renovation works.
