M'sian bride in Terengganu dons gothic vampire-themed outfit for wedding reception

A Malaysian woman's wedding reception photos have gone viral on social media after she appeared dressed up in a gothic vampire-themed bridal outfit.

According to Malaysian media Mingguan Wanita, the reception took place on Feb. 1 in Kemaman, Terengganu.

The bride, who only wants to be known as Mek Sa Sargaroth, said she wore the more conventional white outfit for her solemnisation on Jan. 31.

She was quoted as saying, "For our reception, my husband and I decided to do a gothic vampire theme as we both like black metal. My husband is a music teacher and has been part of Modar, a black metal band, since 1989."

She added, "I tried to convince my husband to put on a gothic look but he wanted to wear the traditional Baju Melayu, complete with the sampin (traditional Malay merchant cloth). It's a combination of two themes, Gothic Europe versus Traditional Malay. A combination of east and west."

The bride said she spent almost RM40,000 (S$12,080) for her wedding.

As for her dress, it came up to almost RM2,000 (S$604).

"It's not easy to find the outfit. There are three layers, including the dress," she said.

She added that her outfit has come under criticism by some netizens.

However, her family has no issue with the theme.

"To me, every wedded couple has the right to choose how they want to plan their own wedding," she said.

Makeup artist: First time she has received such a request for a wedding

According to a Facebook post by the makeup artist, Dib Diba, this is the first time she has received a request for a gothic vampire theme for a wedding.

The makeup artist wrote:

"Thank you for hiring me, only the strong-hearted can accept this task. It's not strange because her husband is the vocalist/guitarist for Modar, a metal band.

In my time as a makeup artist, I've never received a bride requesting a gothic vampire theme for her reception. Usually these kind of requests are for events."

She said the first time Mek Sa Sargaroth dropped her a message over WhatsApp, she thought the bride wanted a "smokey look".

She added:

"The first time she dropped me a WhatsApp, I thought the bride wanted a smokey look. And then she sent me image references of gothic makeup. I was shocked and thought: "Is she for real, I've never done this before". After a detailed discussion, from the eye makeup, to the contact lenses and lipstick, this is the gothic bride look that we came up with.

Everyone has their own preference and as a makeup artist, it's my job to help them to make it into reality. Let's celebrate our differences. The most important thing is the bride's happiness."
