Balestier Market tenancy extended 2 years, hawkers need not move
They were initially informed the food centre will close after Apr. 15, 2025.
Hawkers at Balestier Market can heave a collective sigh of relief as the food centre has its tenancy extended by another two years.
It was previously reported that the stallholders had to vacate the premises, as Apr. 15, 2025 will be their last day of business.
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said tenancy extension negotiations started about six months ago: "Balestier Market & Food Centre has been managed by a master tenant KNC Global Pte Ltd since April 2013."
"KNC Global was engaged since October 2024 ahead of the tenancy expiry, with ongoing discussions for a potential tenancy extension of up to two years, to facilitate business continuity and transition plans for the stall sub-tenants."
In response to queries from 8world News, a spokesperson of KNC Global confirmed that SLA granted a two-year tenancy extension and there will not be an increase in rental.
Balestier Market is privately operated and not managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA).
Hawkers interviewed by the Chinese media said they were relieved to hear the news, as they do not have to search for another stall elsewhere and some had invested money into their business only recently, such as by purchasing a refrigerator.
Another hawker said: "If the rent increases, I don't want to renew the contract. I feel relieved now because there is more time for us to prepare. We don't have to rush to find a stall in two months."
