Man, 36, tries to deposit S$10,000 counterfeit note, gets found out & arrested

A 36-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly tried to deposit a S$10,000 counterfeit note into his bank account.

On Dec. 23, 2024, the man was at a bank at Upper Cross Street when he allegedly presented a S$10,000 note to the counter staff.

He then asked for it to be deposited.

Suspecting that the note might be counterfeit, the staff member informed the manager.

The police were alerted. They subsequently arrested the man and seized the note for investigation.

The man will be charged on Jan. 23 under Section 489B of the Penal Code.

For using a counterfeit currency note as though it were genuine, he could be jailed up to 20 years and fined.

The police also advised members of public to be cautious of individuals offering money in exchange for assistance to convert counterfeit notes to genuine currency, or to deposit such notes at banks and other financial institutions.

If you have received a suspected counterfeit note, contact the police at 999, note the description of the persons involved and any vehicles used, and place the note in a protective covering before handing it over to the police.
