Malaysia's immigration department has detained 152 foreign nationals in a raid on a luxury karaoke entertainment club in Kuala Lumpur, which catered to "VVIP" customers.

According to Malaysian media, the club was located within a three-star hotel along Jalan Changkat in Bukit Bintang, and occupied six floors.

Most of the detainees were mainland Chinese nationals, comprising 129 out of the 152. The other nationalities included two Taiwanese, five Vietnamese, five Myanmar nationals, eight Bangladeshis, and one each from Indonesia, Turkey and Vanuatu.

Drugs found during raid, arrests made for immigration-related offences

During the raid, which was carried out at 1:30am on May 15, ketamine and other drug paraphernalia were found in luxury suites located on the club's fifth floor.

TheĀ New Straits TimesĀ reported that each room was occupied by Chinese men and "foreign female guest relations officers" from Vietnam, China and Thailand, some of whom were seen openly using drugs.

However, the arrests made were only for immigration-related offences as neither the police nor the National Anti-Drugs Agency was involved in the raid.

The director-general of Malaysia's immigration department said the club is believed to have begun operations three months ago.

He was quoted as saying, "The premises were tightly guarded and access was only granted to certain customers, with exclusive rooms priced from RM50,000 (S$16,177) to RM100,000 (S$32,353) and available for bookings for more than 24 hours."

The raid on the venue followed public complaints and two weeks of intelligence gathering by the Putrajaya immigration enforcement division.
