Tada & Gojek to increase surcharge to at least S$0.90 from Apr. 10 to help drivers with fuel costs
Both platforms clarified that drivers will receive the full fee.
Ride-hailing platforms Tada and Gojek have announced increased surcharges to mitigate higher fuel costs amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.
According to The Straits Times (ST), this increase will be implemented from Apr. 10 to May 31.
On Apr. 3, both platforms sent emails to their users, announcing a temporary price hike from the current 50 cents to at least 90 cents for all trips.
Both platforms clarified that their drivers will receive the full fee to cover rising fuel costs.
Grab had previously announced similar measures on Mar. 31.
Tada
However, Tada will also apply an additional S$1.20 increase for trips priced over S$18.10 .
The company also said that a one-time support payout of S$40 was provided to selected drivers on Mar. 20.
Tada said: "We remain committed to supporting our driver-partners, so they can continue providing reliable rides for you; while continuing to look after the interest of our riders."
Gojek
According to ST, Gojek said that GoTaxi rides will be unaffected by the increase.
Gojek also offered passengers S$1 off the next five rides with the promo code "WEGOTU".
Gojek added that it was "keeping a close eye on the developing situation".
Cost of fuel
The cost of fuel has exceeded high prices during the 2022 onset of the Ukraine war, reported ST.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that 25 per cent of the world’s seaborne oil trade transits through the Strait of Hormuz, with 80 per cent of that bound for Asian markets.
The waterway has been effectively closed since the Iran War.
According to Price Kaki, a mobile app developed by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), the current prices for Fuel 95 range from S$3.42 to S$3.47 at most petrol kiosks.
Taxi operators such as GrabCab, Strides Premier and Prime Taxi also increased metered fares from Mar. 30 to May 31.
