US big-game hunter, 75, gets killed by elephants during hunting expedition
The vineyard owner was an avid big-game hunter.
Millionaire American vineyard owner and big-game hunter Ernie Dosio was killed by a group of elephants on Apr. 17.
While on a hunting expedition for antelopes in Gabon, Africa, the 75-year-old millionaire and his guide came across five female elephants with calves in a rainforest, reported The Guardian.
A friends of Dosio told the New York Times that the hunting party backed off from the pachyderms, but the herd charged at them in an attempt to scare the hunters away.
One of Dosio's hunting partners was attacked and seriously injured, while another grabbed Dosio and tried to get him to safety behind a tree.
However, he was attacked by another elephant and fatally gored with its tusk.
Dosio's remains are said to be set for repatriation to the U.S.
He was known as an experienced hunter who sought big-game targets, including elephants and lions, both in the U.S. and abroad.
His home was also said to have been filled with stuffed exotic animals, reported the New York Times.
