M'sia mechanic rejects money a 2nd time after fixing single dad's motorcycle late at night

A mechanic in Malaysia won praise for fixing the motorcycle of a stranded rider late at night and then refusing payment.

A TikTok, shot from the perspective of the mechanic, whose moniker is "Abang Usop" and who goes by @minyakhitamjalanan_, was shared online on Apr. 17.

It raked up more than 20 million views on TikTok and Facebook within a few days.

What original video showed

The mechanic was contacted to fix a motorcycle at 12:30am after the vehicle's chain snapped and the front sprocket went missing.

The total quoted repair fee was RM145 (S$46.64): RM25 (S$8) for the front sprocket, RM80 (S$25.73) for the chain, and RM40 (S$12.87) for labour.

Once the repairs were done, the mechanic noticed that the rider had RM176 (S$56.61) left in his e-wallet and asked if he would still have money for food.

The motorcyclist appeared hesitant, but repeatedly insisted on paying the owed amount in full.

But the mechanic turned it down.

The motorcyclist, overwhelmed by emotion, then hugged the mechanic.

Motorcyclist identified, funds raised

After the video of the incident was shared widely online, the motorcyclist was identified as Dicky Yau, a single father.

People in Malaysia started to put together funds for him.

Yau received more than RM5,000 (S$1,608) in public donations, it was reported.

On Apr. 18, Yau promised to give half of the public donations he received to “Abang Usop”, so that he could help others.

He also wanted to pay RM3,000 (S$964) to the mechanic out of the RM5,000 raised.

“I would like to thank everyone who sent private messages to offer help. However, I cannot accept any donations from anyone,” he said in a social media post on Saturday.

“If there is any account asking for donations using my name, it is fake. Thanks everyone for your concern.”

In a new TikTok, the two men were seen meeting again.

“I am returning the cash to you,” he told Yau, who was also seen trying to reject the money put in his hands.

“You have a child who is going to school. I am helping you,” the mechanic said in the TikTok.

Yau could be seen tearing up, and the two men hugged.
