Loud popping sounds were reportedly heard coming from a factory in Kallang.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the residents of Kallang reported hearing sounds coming from a factory located at Kallang Centre since Mar. 29.

The loud noises caused the windows in their homes to vibrate, waking them in the middle of the night.

Factory at Kallang Centre

A 60-year-old male resident, Zeng (transliterated), who lives at Block 12 along Upper Boon Keng Road, told Shin Min Daily News that he and his wife were woken by a loud bang in the early hours of Mar. 29.

They were unable to fall back asleep.

The 60-year-old believed that the sounds came from a factory located at Kallang Centre, across the Kallang River, more than 100 metres away from his residence.

Based on photos and videos provided by Zeng, a large silver tank about 2 metres tall, placed outside an industrial building, was seen emitting a large amount of white smoke.

Zeng initially thought that this was an isolated incident.

However, similar sounds were heard again at around 5.30 am and 8:30 pm on Apr. 11.

The 60-year-old claimed that the noises have severely affected and disrupted both him and his wife’s daily routines.

Fearing potential safety issues such as a nitrogen gas leak from the factory, he lodged a police report.

Not the only one who heard the noises

Several residents of the housing estate also confirmed that they heard similar explosion-like sounds.

The noises often occurred in the early morning or late at night, causing considerable disturbance.

Another resident, Cai (transliterated), an 85-year-old female who lives on the 10th floor of Block 12, said that she also heard an explosion around 8:00 am on one morning.

She claimed that similar sounds occurred intermittently.

While Cai did not smell any unusual odours, she added that the sudden noises were unsettling.

Two other residents, who wished to remain anonymous, also stated that the noises were disturbing, especially when the surroundings were quiet.

The person in charge of the factory said the sounds came from an old tank, and checks had shown no safety concerns.

After the complaints, the factory was told to resolve the noise issue quickly.
