A 19-year-old professional boxer from the United States, Isis Sio, is in a medically induced coma after being knocked out during a fight in California on Saturday (Mar 21), according to ESPN.
Knockout happened 78 seconds into match
Sio was facing fellow boxer Jocelyn Camarillo at the Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino, California, when she was knocked unconscious early in the bout.
The fight ended just 78 seconds after it began.
Sio received immediate medical attention at ringside before being taken to Loma Linda University Health, where doctors placed her in a medically induced coma.
She was reportedly seen convulsing shortly after the knockout, which could indicate the seriousness of her injuries.
Promoter says team is hoping for full recovery
In a statement shared after the fight, ProBoxTV said:
“Ms Sio is currently in a medically induced coma. Our thoughts are with her and her family at this very difficult time.”
They also expressed hope she would make a full recovery.
One of North Dakota’s only active female professional boxers
Sio, who is from North Dakota, turned professional in September and was believed to be the state’s only active female professional boxer.
Her professional record now stands at one win and three losses.
It is not yet clear how long she will remain in the coma or the full extent of her injuries.
