The incident took place on Mar. 23, 2026.
A fire broke out at Sembawang Shopping Centre on the morning of Mar. 23, 2026.
This caused thick smoke to engulf the second-floor corridor of the mall, Lianhe Zaobao reported.
Zaobao understands that the incident was said to have taken place at Wingstop, located on the second floor of the mall.
Fire
When Zaobao arrived at the scene around 10:30am on Mar. 23, the area had been cordoned off, and people in the mall, including children, were evacuated to the ground floor.
Oil stains were also observed on the ground, according to Zaobao.
An employee of a shop who wished to remain anonymous told Zaobao that he witnessed the entire incident when the fire broke out as he was taking orders at the cashier.
"There were about nine customers having breakfast in the store at the time," he added, saying that he quickly evacuated customers after witnessing the fire.
No reported injuries
Responding to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed being alerted at about 9:40am on Mar. 23, 2026, to a fire at 604 Sembawang Road, which is the address of Sembawang Shopping Centre.
The fire involved a deep fryer in a second-floor unit and was extinguished by the sprinkler system before SCDF's arrival.
SCDF said there were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Contained within kitchen area
In response to Mothership's queries, Sembawang Shopping Centre confirmed that after a "small fire" occurred at Wingstop's kitchen area before mall opening hours, "the situation was promptly contained, and the safety of our shoppers and tenants remains our top priority".
"In line with established safety protocols, the mall's emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and our team worked closely with the relevant authorities," said Sembawang Shopping Centre.
The mall added: "Efforts are also underway to reinstate the affected area as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to tenants' operations."
Responding to Mothership's queries, Wingstop said: "Our absolute priority is the safety of our team and the public.
"We are relieved to confirm that all staff were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported."
It added that the incident was contained within the kitchen area before opening hours. No customers were present at the time.
Wingstop added: "We would like to commend the mall's management team for their swift assistance.
"Their coordination, alongside the activation of the building's fire suppression systems, ensured the situation was brought under control promptly, and the fire was extinguished before SCDF arrived."
Noting that it is currently working with the SCDF and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, Wingstop said the outlet will remain closed temporarily "as we prioritise the well-being of our staff and the full restoration of our kitchen to its highest standards".
"We thank our customers for their patience and look forward to welcoming them back soon."
