TelegramWhatsappCommuters rushing for closing doors is a scene repeated at many MRT stations throughout the day in Singapore.

But on Jan. 30, it wasn’t commuters rushing for a train; the were trying to beat a closing metal shutter, like a real life version of Indiana Jones.

Don't forget your hat

At around 5pm on Jan. 30, a metal rolling shutter began to close at the entrance between Vivo City and the Harbourfront MRT station.

The shutter’s closing was apparently not accompanied by any station announcement explaining why the shutter was closing, although an alarm blared in the background.

In a TikTok video shared by Tiamjiakprincess, the shutter is shown slowly closing.

Commuters reacted to the closing shutter by rushing, not away from it, but towards it, with many trying to duck under the shutter to make their way either into the mall or into the train station before it closed.

There did not appear to be any official presence, either in the mall or the station until just before the shutter fully closed, when someone on the Vivocity side of the shutter appears to stand in front of it, and no one else crossed.

Despite the alarm and the closing shutter, there was no obvious sign of an emergency taking place in either the mall or the station.

Super dangerous

Comments on the video expressed dismay at what they saw.

One noted that the people running in and out of the area were “super dangerous”.

Another said that if it had been a real fire, there could have been tragic consequences.

It is not immediately clear if the metal shutters were fire shutters.

One even lamented those who might have had to work in Vivo City.

There are apparently no direct alternative routes, although a nearby exit does open to just outside the mall area on the ground floor.

Mothership has reached out to Vivocity for comment, and understands that the shutter was on the Vivocity side of the entrance.
