Two boys in China's Jiangsu province recently faced backlash for allegedly burning a Samoyed dog to death by throwing a lit firework into its cage.

The incident occurred at around noon on Feb. 1, 2026, news.ltn.com reported, adding that the dog belonged to a woman named Jiang.

Her dog was placed in a cage in a public area when two boys in the neighbourhood reportedly threw a lit firework into the cage.

Burned to death

As a result, the cloth covering the cage caught fire and spread rapidly to the rest of the cage.

Surveillance footage showed the dog howling in agony, news.ltn.com reported, adding that the dog was subsequently burned to death.

Unapologetic

Jiang chose to release surveillance footage of the incident as the boys' parents were reportedly unapologetic, China Press reported.

According to m.thecover.cn, Jiang's family had raised the dog for seven years and were very fond of it.

However, following the dog's death, the boys' parents allegedly offered 6,000 yuan (S$1,098) or to replace the dog as compensation.

In addition, they reportedly dismissed the dog as "just a dog".

Settlement

Following this, sina.cn reported that based on screenshots of an apology letter circulating online, both families have reached an agreement with Jiang.

Each family was said to have paid 3,000 yuan (S$549) in compensation.

In addition, they also signed a mediation agreement at the police station where the children and their parents apologised on the spot.
