The Workers' Party (WP) will not be nominating another WP Member of Parliament (MP) as the new Leader of the Opposition (LO).
In a statement on Jan. 21, the party said it has responded to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong regarding the vacancy of the office of the LO.
"The Workers' Party takes the view that the leader of the largest opposition party in Parliament, is the leader of the opposition.
As such, the Workers' Party has conveyed to the Prime Minister that we will not be nominating another Worker's Party Member of Parliament to the LO post."
The WP added that the party will continue to focus on their primary duty, which is "to work for Singaporeans and provide a rational, responsible, and respectable check on the government".
On Jan. 15, PM Wong removed WP chief Pritam Singh from his position as the LO.
The decision came after the majority of Singapore Parliament voted to support Leader of the House Indranee Rajah’s motion to consider Singh unsuitable as LO, following his court conviction in the Raeesah Khan case in 2025, in Parliament on Jan. 14.
In a statement on Jan. 15, PM Wong said the decision to do so is "necessary to uphold the rule of law, as well as the dignity and integrity of Parliament".
He stated that though Singh had disagreed with the findings and maintained his innocence, "questions of guilt or innocence are determined through the impartial court process", adding that Singh's earlier appeal to the High Court had been dismissed.
PM Wong then invited WP to nominate another MP to serve as the next LO.
In the letter to PM Wong on Jan. 21, the WP Central Executive Committee rejected PM Wong's invitation, stating that the party has their own "established processes for electing [their] leadership".
