US Embassy in S'pore invites businesses to 'consider substantially larger gifts' for Jul. 4 celebrations
To commemorate 250 years of American independence.
A letter from the U.S. Embassy in Singapore has been circulating online, inviting businesses to donate to the Embassy in support of its 2026 celebration of American independence.
In the letter signed by the U.S. Ambassador, the Embassy stated that 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, which is "a major White House priority".
It added that on Apr. 4, it will also mark 60 years of U.S.-Singapore diplomatic relations.
"Throughout 2026, we plan to celebrate these milestones with our friends in Singapore to honour the partnership between our two nations," it wrote.
Funding
To "support this momentous occasion", the letter called on Singapore businesses for their financial contributions.
"Our celebration will depend on the generosity of American and Singaporean businesses. Your partnership and financial contributions will help us honour the history we are proud to share and inspire us to look to future opportunities," it stated.
However, the line that online users pointed out was one that encouraged partners "to consider substantially larger gifts than in previous years in support of our 250th anniversary."

However, one Facebook comment noted that other embassies do similar outreach with companies that have ties to the Embassy or the country.
Same as other American Embassies
In response to Mothership's queries, a U.S. Embassy spokesperson said this is in line with the practices of every American Embassy worldwide.
"We plan to host a July 4 celebration befitting the day America celebrates as the most important milestone in our country’s history—250 years of American Independence.
We’re asking our private sector partners to support the event, just as every American Embassy around the world does every year for Independence Day."
