147 North View Primary School students reported gastroenteritis symptoms since Jan. 13
Most have recovered as of Jan. 18.
147 students from North View Primary School have reportedly experienced symptoms of gastroenteritis, according to a joint statement by the school, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), and the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA).
According to the Jan. 19 statement, students across different levels were reported to have these symptoms since Jan. 13.
Most students have recovered as of Jan. 18.
One student was hospitalised on Jan. 17 and discharged on Jan. 18 in stable condition.
The school has been in touch with affected students and their parents, and will continue to monitor their well-being.
The school, SFA and CDA are currently investigating the incident.
Not linked to specific food source
Mothership received a tip-off from a parent of an affected student on Jan. 18.
According to a circular sent to parents that was seen by Mothership, the school noted an "unusually high" number of unwell students in the cohort with symptoms like vomiting, fever, stomach upset and diarrhoea.
As the students ate food from different canteen stalls, the school assured parents that the cause is not linked to a specific food source.
Added measures
Gastroenteritis can spread through multiple transmission routes, including consumption of contaminated food or water, person-to-person contact, or through contaminated environments.
The school has also taken added precautionary measures including cleaning and sanitising all classrooms and common areas. It has also minimised whole-school gatherings.
Students have also been reminded to practise good personal hygiene and to rest at home if they are unwell.
