WhatsappAn imam, or Muslim religious teacher, in Malaysia filmed a fellow mosque committee member viewing pornography within the house of worship.

However, he was later told to resign from his position after being accused of tarnishing the mosque's reputation.

Caught red-handed

A video taken by the imam, Muhammad Adhan Adnan, which exposed the committee member's acts, was shared on social media.

The incident reportedly occurred in Melaka on Dec. 27, 2025, according to Malaysian media Berita Harian.

The nearly two-minute clip showed the man viewing explicit content on a computer in a room, believed to be the mosque's office.

He was only aware of being recorded after Adnan knocked on the room's window, after which he hurriedly switched the screen's browser to another site.

He then emerged from the room and denied any wrongdoing after Adnan asked what he was doing.

Adnan could also be heard saying in Malay, "This is a mosque, two individuals with me are witnesses to the marriage because there is a bride and groom who are getting married this morning. This recording is not edited or uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology."

According to him, the man in question was allegedly the mosque's secretary and also linked to a Malaysian political party.

Imam dismissed

The issue was said to be scheduled for a discussion next week, according to Melaka's State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee Chairman Rahmad Mariman.

However, Adnan revealed days later that he was asked to resign from his position following instructions from the mosque's chairman.

In a Jan. 22 Facebook post, he said he was accused of embarrassing the name of the mosque by exposing its secretary.

He also explained that the video was taken solely for reference of the authorities and that he had no intention to upload the clip online.

Other "irresponsible parties" had shared the video on social media, he claimed.

Nonetheless, Adnan reportedly stepped down from his post, expressing his disappointment with the mosque's management in a Jan. 21 letter.

In it, he described the committee as weak and afraid to take action against the secretary, and was disappointed by the lack of action taken.

"There was no defence from the mosque for me as an imam when other parties accused me, twisted the facts, and even cursed me for attempting to expose the misconduct taking place in the mosque," he said.
