Man, 27, found dead in room on Royal Caribbean cruise after docking at Marina Bay Cruise Centre
The police do not suspect foul play.
A 27-year-old man was found motionless on board a cruise ship on Jan. 19 morning.
He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by the in-house doctor.
Mothership understands that the cruise ship was Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas.
Responding to queries from Mothership, a Singapore Police Force (SPF) spokesperson shared that the police received a call for assistance at Marina Bay Cruise Centre at 6:35am on Jan. 19.
Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Coded announcement in wee hours
A guest, who wanted to be known as "AT" and was aboard Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the time, told Mothership that an announcement was made over the ship's public announcement system at around 5:45am on Jan. 19.
The cruise had just returned from a four-day and three-night voyage to Penang, having departed Singapore on Jan. 16.
It docked at Marina Bay Cruise Centre.
According to her, the announcement read out a code, which she surmised was meant to notify staff of a situation without alarming guests.
The code was followed by a room number.
"It sounded out of place as they never make announcements in the wee hours of the morning," she said.
AT was staying on the same level and just a few doors down from the room in question.
She later saw people sprinting to the room and heard a commotion, including the slamming of a door.
Police on board
She didn't make much of it at that point, until she saw police on board as she was preparing to head for breakfast prior to disembarkation.
She also noticed that the room had been cordoned off.
There was also a white box covering the door handle and lock, with a large padlock on it.
"It was very discreet. You wouldn't notice unless you were looking out. The other rooms were all emptied out as the guests had to leave the room to prepare for disembarkation," AT recounted.
Mothership has reached out to Royal Caribbean for comments.
