Israel PM Netanyahu to join Trump's Board of Peace which oversees Gaza rebuild, Putin also invited

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the invitation to join the "Board of Peace" proposed by U.S. President Donald's Trump, Netanyahu's office announced on X on Jan. 21.

The Board of Peace, announced by the White House on Jan. 16, aims to help end the conflict in Gaza and oversee its reconstruction.

It will also later be expanded to tackle other global conflicts, according to a copy of the letter and draft charter cited by Reuters.

Permanent membership of the board costs US$1 billion (S$ 1.29 billion) in cash funds, but limited membership could be held for free.

Trump, who will chair the board, has extended an invitation to dozens of countries, including Singapore.

Israel joins several countries that have already agreed, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Pakistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was also invited, said the Russian foreign ministry was studying the proposal and would respond in due course, Reuters reported.

Israel's previous objections

Previously on Jan. 17, Israel raised objections to the leaders appointed to a committee under the Board of Peace that will help oversee the governance and stability of Gaza.

"The announcement regarding the composition of the Gaza Executive Board, which is subordinate to the Board of Peace, was not coordinated with Israel and runs contrary to its policy," Netanyahu's office said, as quoted by DW.

The members appointed to the Gaza Executive Board include Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
