Drivers in Hong Kong will only be allowed to place up to two mobile devices in front of them while driving from Jan. 25, 2026, according to the city's Transport Department.

The mobile devices include mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

Each screen must measure no more than 19cm (7.48 inches) diagonally and must not obstruct the driver’s view of the road, traffic, mirrors, or monitoring equipment.

Those who violate the new rule could be fined up to HK$2,000 (S$330).

However, built-in electronic screens in vehicles, including those used for navigation or radio functions, will not be counted under the rule, The Standard reported.

The clampdown comes amidst concerns that multiple screens in vehicles pose a danger to drivers, passengers, and other road users.

It has been observed that some drivers rely on multiple devices at a time to secure ride-hailing jobs, while using navigation maps.

Occasionally, they would also send texts or voice messages on devices placed on hands-free mounts.
