Driver spots young cyclist with passenger in basket along Choa Chu Kang, cites safety concerns
Safety risk.
A driver spotted two young individuals at a traffic junction along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 and noted the rather dangerous way they were riding a bicycle.
In a photo sent by a Mothership reader, a young female was sitting in the basket of a HelloRide bicycle with a young man as the rider.
The Mothership reader shared that the incident occurred on Jan. 18 and felt the situation was "concerning and dangerous".
Safety concerns
Speaking on the incident, the Mothership reader pointed out that the bicycle's basket is not meant to carry a seated passenger, describing it as a "clear misuse of public property" and that it could result in damage to the bicycle.
"More importantly, it poses a serious safety risk to both individuals" as well as "road users," he added, noting that the person in the basket could sustain severe injuries if the cyclist were to lose control.
In addition, the cyclist could lose control, potentially harming pedestrians and nearby vehicles.
"This type of action increases the risk of accidents and should not be encouraged... I felt it was important to highlight this incident due to the potential safety implications."
