The long break is to give the employees, who often work day and night to meet orders, time to rest and enjoy the holiday with family.

A company in Wenzhou, China, recently attracted attention and envy after it announced its staff holidays for the Lunar New Year.

Haoyun Hardware will be giving all employees 35 days off from Feb. 1 to Mar. 7, according to the notice circulated online.

Work would resume on Mar. 8, a Sunday.

This is more than three times longer than China's nine days of public holidays for the Lunar New Year in 2026.

Haoyun Hardware's sales employees, however, will still have to be ready to work when necessary during their holiday.

They were instructed to ensure they can be contacted via the phone 24 hours a day, and respond promptly to customers' requests and related tasks within the company's usual working hours.

Bonus

On top of the long holiday, those who return to work on time will receive a bonus of RMB 5,000 (S$922) each at the end of the month.

Anyone who took additional leave either before or after this period will not be entitled to the bonus.

Employees with young children, though, can apply to take up to two more days of rest after sending their children back to school, and still enjoy the bonus when they return.

A chance to rest

According to its website, Haoyun Hardware produces machine equipment and parts.

The boss, surnamed Zhang, used to be a barber before founding the company, according to China's Tide News.

He shared that the company has adopted the same policy for Lunar New Year staff holidays every year for the past 11 years since its founding.

Many of the employees come from outside the city and live apart from their families due to work, Zhang explained.

He said no matter how busy work gets, the company aims to let its staff return to their hometowns to celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families.

As business in the manufacturing industry typically does not stop, the employees often work day and night to meet orders and would rarely get a break.

The 35-day holiday was thus the company's way of rewarding them for their hard work by letting them enjoy a break with their families at home.

"We gave our all for 11 months when we had to work hard. This last month should be reserved for resting and enjoying time with family," Zhang told Tide News.

Boosting staff morale

Zhang added that the company did receive orders during the Lunar New Year holidays, but he decided not to accept the orders, even though it cost him some customers.

He believes that a business should care not only about profits, but also that its staff can comfortably enjoy the holidays.

This way, the new year will see stronger employee morale and teamwork.

This philosophy has translated to very low employee turnover, according to Zhang.

Many of the staff have been working in the company for over 10 years.

An employee told Tide News, "We get such a long break every Lunar New Year, and our income is also not generally less than others. To have a boss like this, we are very happy to work here."
