A Muslim cemetery in Sydney has been desecrated with pig heads in what is being investigated as a possible act of retribution following the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, reported The Telegraph.

They were reportedly dumped on or near graves at the Al Nur Islamic Cemetery in Narellan, in Sydney’s south-west, prompting condemnation from community figures and an investigation by the New South Wales Police.

The incident

Police said they received reports at about 6am on Monday (Dec. 15) of animal remains left at the entrance of a cemetery along Richardson Road in Narellan.

Officers who attended the scene found several pig heads and immediately began investigations.

The pig heads were later removed and disposed of, according to news.com.au.

Pork is considered haram, or forbidden, in Islam and is viewed as unclean.

It is also considered non-kosher in Judaism, making the act particularly offensive to both Muslim and Jewish communities.

Act condemned by Muslim community

Ahmad Hraichie, a Muslim undertaker with 1.8 million followers on Instagram and who has worked at the Narellan cemetery before, said the pig heads had been thrown onto graves at the cemetery, possibly as an act of retribution after the attack.

In a post shared online, he condemned the act as hateful and pointless.

“Graves are places of rest, dignity, and respect – across all faiths and all humanity.”

Hraichie added: “To whoever did this: you have proven nothing except hatred. You are not a solution to any problem – you are part of the problem.”

He added that such actions only fuelled anger and division, saying “if you want peace, this is not the way. If you want justice, this is not the way”.

Following the Bondi Beach shooting, the association operating the cemetery also issued a statement condemning the attack and distancing the Muslim community from the violence.

The statement reads:

“The Australian Muslim community unequivocally condemns the horrific acts of violence that occurred at Bondi Beach.

“Acts of violence against innocent people are not rooted in faith ... Islam explicitly forbids the taking of innocent life.”

Police urge calm

The New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon called for calm and warned against acts of retribution.

He said, as cited by The Telegraph:

“The police are investigating thoroughly. We have acted promptly. We have taken decisive action. Could I just ask for calm in the community, allow the police to do our job.”

As of now, no arrests have been announced in connection with the cemetery incident.
