American food delivery company DoorDash has acquired London-based delivery company Deliveroo on Oct. 2.

In a letter addressed to Deliveroo's merchant partners, consumers, and riders, Doordash CEO and co-founder Tony Xu said the Deliveroo app will still be available to customers, businesses, and platform workers in Singapore.

DoorDash and Deliveroo share a mission

In his letter, Xu reflected on DoorDash's journey since 2013.

He wrote: "Our mission was simple: grow and empower local economies. We wanted to create a world where every local business — small, medium, and large — could connect with every local consumer. We wanted to enable communities to thrive, with vibrant High Streets and ample opportunities for people to earn."

Xu added that DoorDash and Deliveroo share a common mission, which is to focus on serving the local communities where they operate.

Reassuring stakeholders, he said the Deliveroo app and its services would remain intact in Singapore.

"You'll still be able to order your favourites, run your businesses, or work and earn on the platform as you do today," he said.

Future plans

Looking ahead, Xu said DoorDash plans to leverage its global scale and technology to enhance opportunities for all users.

For merchants, the focus will be on helping businesses to "not just succeed, but flourish" with more products and services, including better tools or future innovations, both online and offline.

For consumers, the company aims to expand choice, improve quality, enhance affordability, and create new ways to connect with local businesses, while making the ordering experience "faster, smarter, and more delightful".

For riders, DoorDash intends to "protect the flexibility that makes this work unique" while investing in improvements such as better mapping and new support to make delivering "easier, safer, and more secure".

Xu described the acquisition as the "beginning of a new chapter, not the end of an old one".

He said that Deliveroo's "DNA", which is its "customer obsession" and "relentless pursuit" to improve experiences, remains the same.

"By combining that with DoorDash’s global scale and technology, we have the opportunity to serve more people, in more places, with greater impact."

DoorDash, founded in 2013 in the United States, has since expanded to over 30 countries worldwide.

Deliveroo, a British company, first launched internationally in Singapore in 2015.
