Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade & Industry Gan Kim Yong will visit the U.S. from Jul. 20 to Jul. 26.

Gan to meet U.S. Cabinet Secretaries and members of Congress

According to a press release by the Ministry for Trade and Industry (MTI), he will visit New York on Jul. 21 before heading to Washington D.C. from Jul. 22 to the end of the trip.

The visit will build on the "robust and multi-faceted" partnership between Singapore and the U.S., including the economic and commercial relationship, the press release added.

During this visit, Gan will meet U.S. Cabinet Secretaries, members of Congress, and business and private-sector representatives.

He will also participate in a business roundtable organised by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he will discuss international and regional economic developments, as well as opportunities for future collaboration between the U.S. and Singapore companies.

Gan will be accompanied by officials from the MTI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

The U.S. is Singapore's second-largest trading partner

MTI highlighted that in 2024, the U.S. was Singapore's second-largest trading partner while Singapore was the US’ 16th largest trading partner.

In addition, Singapore is the third largest Asian investor in the U.S. with over 250 companies in 45 U.S. states.

This includes growing collaboration in areas such as technology and energy which complements the "strong" defence, security and interpersonal ties between the two countries.

U.S. tariffs on Singapore

On Jul. 10, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said that Singapore would need to be prepared for a longer period of uncertainty after the Trump administration sent letters announcing new "reciprocal tariff" rates to over 20 countries.

Singapore has apparently not yet received a letter and remains subject to a baseline 10 per cent tariff.

However, pending confirmation, concessions are expected to be offered to Singapore’s pharmaceutical exports to the U.S.
