Bernama reports that Exercise Thunderstorm Series 1/2025 will be a joint military exercise involving the 21st Special Forces Group (GGK) with the Johor Military Force.

Exercises are planned in several areas around Southeastern Johor, including Desaru, Teluk Ramunia, as well as Pengerang and Tanjung Pengelih, which face Pulau Tekong.

Bernama reports that the TDM said the exercise will involve "various military assets, tactical vehicle movements, helicopter flights, and explosive elements."

It cautioned that local residents and road users were advised to "not panic" and comply with all safety instructions during the exercise.

Notably for Singaporeans with travel plans in the area, roadblocks and traffic control measures will be implemented around the Sungai Johor Bridge by the Royal Malaysian police and Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal on May 10, and a temporary road closure on the E22 Highway from 1am to 3am on May 11.

These routes are notable as the main road and ferry route between Singapore and Desaru.

Readiness for terrorist threats

The Johor Military Force is the oldest armed force in Malaya, according to its website, having been established in 1886.

It is primarily responsible for providing security for the Sultan of Johor, the Crown Prince of Johor, and members of the Royal Family and serving as a ceremonial organisation for occasions such as royal coronations.

It regularly trains with the TDM and other parts of the Malaysian Armed Forces.

TDM stated that the purpose of the exercise was to "ensure readiness in facing any possible terrorist threats to national sovereignty".

The statement also urged members of the public "not to spread any unverified information regarding the exercise."
