You probably don’t need an introduction to Beard Papa’s.

But there’s something you should know about it: the brand is launching a new flavour—the Guanaja cream puff—in collaboration with Rive Gauche patisserie this June.

However, any fan will know that their original custard puffs are hard to beat, so that’s what we’re benchmarking it against.

The office tree may be dying but my love for Beard Papa’s is undying.

As far as first impressions go, this one certainly did well.

If I can’t have a tall, dark and handsome man, this round, dark and handsome cream puff is a close second.

That pretty, glittery sheen? The proverbial cherry on top.

But as they say, what’s inside is equally important.

So here it is:

So, why would a hardcore proponent of the original flavour go for this?

Not just a normal chocolate puff

Well, its flavours are much different, and complex enough that you don’t get bored halfway through.

Its signature custard filling is now folded in with the popular Valrhona Guanaja, a bitter sweet profile that’s a favourite in high-end baking.

The 70% dark chocolate is intense, aromatic, and well-balanced.

Hazelnut praline is added to temper the bitterness, but the Guanaja still retains its sophisticated edge. All in all a smooth combination.

As someone who somehow believes that the more texture a dessert has, the more value-for-money it is, the puff’s coating of feuilletine crunch with dark chocolate eclair really tops it off nicely.

This is unfortunately not a permanent item, and will only be in stores for the month of June, as well as at the KIDZ Pop Con event on June 21 & 22.

The cake version of it: Rive Gauche

If you find yourself craving it after this period, Rive Gauche is your answer.

This Japanese-French patisserie was born in Singapore in 1993, and prides itself on using premium ingredients in their cakes and pastries.

Their signature Guanaja Cake is where the flavour comes from, and you’ll get the same feuilletine crunch with their base, too.

Like the puff, the cake has its own complexity; think layers of Valrhona Guanaja chocolate, aromatic sponge, silky ganache, and a feuilletine crunch, finished with a rich dark glaze.

But unlike the puff, this is a permanent item you can find at all Rive Gauche outlets across the island.

This branded article really puffed the writer up.
