Vietnamese woman, 44, allegedly kills son, 5, to claim insurance money
The case was reopened this year.
A Vietnamese woman was arrested for her suspected involvement in killing her son for profit.
The case was previously suspended in her province.
2 sons died in total
Vietnamnet reported that the woman had three sons and a daughter in total.
Her husband passed away in 2019 due to a serious illness.
According to local media, the police agency at Quang Nam Province decided to temporarily detain To Thi Ty Na, 44, for allegedly killing her son, Nguyen Van Hoang, five, on Jan. 2, 2023.
This was allegedly the second time a child of hers died.
Previously, her youngest son, born in 2019, was also reportedly found drowned in a bucket of water in 2021.
Na had reportedly received over four billion Vietnamese Dong (S$209,400) from insurance payouts.
Case re-investigated
Investigations into the case in 2023 were inconclusive, but it was recently reopened by provincial authorities following a directive to better handle and resolve suspended investigations.
This prompted the police to recently go to the woman's province in order to recreate the crime scene, which attracted thousands of people to congregate to catch a glimpse of proceedings.
Na has denied killing her son.
The provincial police has since taken over the case and the decision to prosecute has been reached.
The case remains under investigation.
