S'porean man drowns in waters off M'sia island

He allegedly encountered currents while swimming at the island.

A Singaporean man passed away after he and two other men went for a swim at Pulau Mawar, an island located in northern Johor, on Apr. 7, 2025.

According to Oriental Daily, the Johor Fire and Rescue Department said it was alerted to the fatal incident at around 2:37pm on Monday.

Before rescue personnel arrived at the scene, the deceased had already been brought to the shore by local residents after he was found floating unconscious in the sea.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of his death was drowning.

The Oriental Daily report did not disclose further information about the deceased.

1 man saved himself, another still missing

According to a statement issued by the Johor Fire and Rescue Department, they were alerted to a suspected drowning case involving three men, reported Oriental Daily.

The trio apparently encountered currents while swimming at the island, and one of them, a Malaysian, managed to save himself.

However, the other two men, including the deceased, were allegedly swept away and had since gone missing.

In response, the department dispatched seven rescue personnel to the scene.

The rescue mission for the third man is still ongoing, with rescue personnel deploying surface search technology in the area where the man was allegedly pulled underwater.
