2 men who gang-raped girl, 16, at Admiralty Park toilet get jail, caning

Two men have been sentenced to jail and caning for gang-raping a 16-year-old girl at a public toilet in Admiralty Park in March 2022.

Muhammad Isnalli David, 22, and Muhammad Al’Amin bin Selamat, 23, both pleaded guilty to one charge of rape, Shin Min Daily News reported.

At the time of the incident, Isnalli was 19 while Al'Amin was 20.

Three other charges for Isnalli and two others for Amin, which included trespassing in the women's toilet, and sexual assault by penetration, were also taken into consideration for sentencing.

Isnalli was sentenced to 12 years and six months' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane, while Al'Amin was sentenced to 10 years and six months' jail and 12 strokes of the cane.

A third person, Raden Zulhusni Zulkifri, 27, is also accused of being involved in the case but is claiming trial.

He faces a charge of sexual assault by penetration and another charge related to trespassing in the women's toilet.

First meeting between the accused and the victim

On Mar. 27, the victim and her friend met Isnalli in the afternoon, according to court documents seen by Mothership.

This was the first time the victim met Isnalli.

The three of them watched a movie together and Isnalli asked the victim to join him for drinks afterwards.

He purchased a bottle of gin and six cans of Red Bull.

They then headed to Admiralty Park where they met Raden, Al'Amin and another 21-year-old female.

Court documents further noted that this was also the first time the victim had met Raden and Al'Amin.

All six of them sat on a bench and drank the alcohol Isnalli had bought.

They were joined by a seventh person, a 20-year-old female.

After becoming intoxicated from drinking, the victim felt the urge to vomit.

She was helped to a female public toilet by Isnalli who was also intoxicated.

Raped multiple times

While in the toilet, Isnalli dragged her by the left arm to a cubicle and locked it.

He partially undressed the victim and raped her.

Meanwhile, Raden and Al'Amin noticed that the victim and Isnalli had been gone for some time and they headed to the female toilet.

Al'Amin entered the toilet first and headed to a cubicle beside Isnalli and the victim. Raden entered the toilet shortly afterwards as well and they saw Isnalli raping the victim.

A 52-second video of the moment was taken. Court documents did not mention who took the video.

Isnalli also raped the victim a second time during which Raden left the toilet.

A while later Al'Amin entered the cubicle and also raped the victim.

He also forced the victim to perform oral sex on him.

During this time, Raden entered the toilet again.

Court documents added that Isnalli observed Raden sexually assaulting the victim.

After Raden and Al'Amin both left, Isnalli raped her one more time.

He then helped the victim put on her clothes.

Throughout the sexual assault by all three men, the victim muttered "don't" and "no" in Malay a few times.

Court documents also stated that during this time, when the other two females in the group noticed that Raden and Al'Amin were gone for a while, they went to check on them.

They entered and left the female toilet a few times.

However, court documents did not mention what they saw or did.

Isnalli apologised to victim at the bus stop afterwards, asked for forgiveness, denied raping the victim the next day

The group then left the park.

While waiting at the bus stop, Isnalli apologised to the victim and asked for forgiveness.

She did not reply him.

The next day, the victim told one of her friends and her brother that she had been raped.

Her friend informed her own brother-in-law, who went with his wife to meet the victim.

He then called Isnalli, who denied raping the victim.

However, they agreed to meet at the park at 4pm.

Isnalli was met by the victim, her brother, her friend, her friend's brother-in-law and his wife.

Isnalli was then beaten up by the victim's brother and friend's brother-in-law.

Meanwhile, Raden and Al'Amin were at Raden's home.

Raden told his father that he was accused of raping a girl.

Al'Amin had wanted to go to the park as well but Raden's father told him not to.

Raden's father then advised them to file a police report and produce the video taken of Isnalli to obtain the police's assistance.

Both Raden and Al'Amin made a police report later in the day at 7:30pm.

Victim: Incident has affected her relationship with her family members

In their sentencing submissions, the prosecution said the victim's relationship with her family members, as well as her ability to trust men had been affected.

Her brother and grandmother has also blamed her for this incident and her relationship with them deteriorated.

While delivering his sentence, judge Aidan Xu was quoted by CNA as saying that rape cases require a harsh sentence regardless of the perpetrators' age.

The victim had been subjected to a "cluster assault" which resulted in prolonged violation and increased the harm inflicted on her, he added.

An assault "one after another" therefore should be met with a heavy response.

For the charge of rape, Al'Amin and Isnalli could have been jailed up to 20 years and fined or caned.
