Man, 23, who died at 2XU Compression Run, an Indonesian engineer working in S'pore
He was conscious when he laid on the ground after the 19km mark.
The 23-year-old man who died on Apr. 27 at the 2XU Compression Run, has been identified as Leonard Darmawan, an Indonesian working in Singapore.
The process engineer worked on Jurong Island with the Singapore Refining Company.
His LinkedIn profile stated that he had studied at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from 2020 to 2024.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in chemical and biomolecular engineering.
His obituary appeared on Apr. 29.
Sequence of events
The Indonesia Ambassador to Singapore revealed what happened that fateful day to The Straits Times.
At around 6:19am on Sunday, roughly two hours after the run started, Leonard apparently laid on the ground after the 19km mark, but was conscious and speaking to other runners.
He was then given cardiopulmonary resuscitation by a person at the scene.
Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics arrived and continued resuscitation efforts on Leonard, who was taken to Singapore General Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 8:01am.
The police concluded at 9:20am that there were no visible injuries and declared no foul play.
The deceased man's death certificate listed cardiorespiratory failure as the cause of death, ST added.
His death is pending further investigations.
The Indonesian man's body was repatriated to Jakarta on Apr. 29.
Background
Over 20,000 participants took part in the 5km, 10km and 21.1km categories on Sunday.
The run started at 4:15am at the F1 Pit Building.
The 2XU Compression Run organisers put up a social media post hours after the event informing the public that a participant had passed away.
Previously, in 2014, a 45-year-old man collapsed during the 2XU Compression Run marathon and died in hospital.
More recently, in December 2024, a Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon runner died after finishing the race.
It was the third death in the marathon's history of the event first held in 2002.
