NSP, SDP to meet & discuss possibly avoiding multi-corner fight in Sembawang GRC
NSP contested Sembawang GRC in 2020.
The National Solidarity Party (NSP) and the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) will be meeting in the upcoming days to avoid a multi-cornered fight in Sembawang GRC at this General Election.
Avoiding a three-corner fight
Speaking to Mothership, NSP Secretary-General Spencer Ng said:
"We are open to discussion on how best they can field their team elsewhere.
We have no intention to move anywhere. We have every intention to contest in Sembawang and Tampines."
NSP previously contested Sembawang GRC in the 2020 general election.
Essence of a mature democracy
Both NSP and SDP were spotted on Sunday (Apr. 6) at Kampung Admiralty, where they exchanged greetings.
SDP said said they intend to contest both Sembawang GRC and Sembawang West SMC on a single combined slate.
When asked at a media doorstop at Kampung Admiralty on Apr. 6 about how SDP feels about a potential multi-cornered fight with NSP, SDP chairman Paul Tambyah said that the party is "very happy for whoever comes into the picture, because that's the essence of a mature democracy".
"We want to give people a choice, and so we welcome anybody who wants to contest and who is sincere about doing something good for Singapore," he added.
Tambyah confirmed with Mothership that SDP will be meeting for a "detailed engagement".
However, Tambyah said that he's "not too troubled" even if they cannot reach an agreement with NSP.
"It's good to give residents a choice. So they have a choice of various different visions for Singapore," he said.
"We're not just there because we're anti-PAP. We're there because we have a vision for Singapore. And I'm sure the NSP does too," he said.
