6.4 magnitude quake hits southern Taiwan
Tainan is home to major factories, including chipmaker TSMC.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the mountainous, rural region of Taiwan's south early Tuesday morning, shortly after midnight, near the city of Chiayi, Reuters reported.
The island's weather administration reported initial minor damage, as buildings in the capital, Taipei, shook.
The quake had a depth of 9.4km with its epicentre in Dapu township in Chiayi county.
The science park in Tainan is home to major factories, including chipmaker TSMC.
The company said it had evacuated staff at its factories in central and southern Taiwan.
The fire department said three people were trapped in a damaged building in the city of Tainan.
Reuters reported that the Chiayi fire department said there were no reports of major casualties so far in the city itself.
Taiwan is prone to earthquakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
A 7.2 magnitude quake in April 2024 hit the east coast county of Hualien, killing 13 people.
A quake in southern Taiwan in 2016 resulted in more than 100 dead, while a 7.3 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
