A 67-year-old woman and her 71-year-old husband, were discovered dead together in their residential unit at Block 338 Kang Ching Road.

Their passing was discovered on Dec. 15, 2024, after a neighbour on the same floor noticed a smell along the common corridor and notified the police, reported The Straits Times.

According to ST, the elderly couple's bodies were found in a state of decomposition, and they passed away due to natural causes.

Elderly couple suffered from health issues: Neighbour

Speaking to ST, the resident who alerted the police, surnamed Lim, said he initially thought the deceased had been hospitalised when he did not see them for three days.

He only became suspicious that something amiss after noticing the foul smell had become stronger.

According to Lim, the deceased man suffered from several chronic illnesses, and his leg had appeared "swollen" and "darker" due to diabetes before his passing.

At the same time, the deceased man also acted as a caregiver for his wife, who was a wheelchair user.

The couple's neighbours also recounted that they seldom had visitors, but a few individuals attended their wake to pay respects on Jan. 6, 2025.

While the ST report stated the couple's "friends and relatives" were amongst their wake attendees, it did not specify whether the couple had any children.

'Jovial and loving' individuals

Lim told ST that the deceased man was "very nice" as he often bought snacks for him and checked on other residents at the public housing block.

Another resident who lived on the floor above the deceased man, surnamed Ng, corroborated Lim's account.

According to Ng, the deceased man used to visit him at least once a week, and the last time he saw the deceased man was in early December.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) Shawn Huang described the deceased man and his wife as "jovial" and "loving" individuals.

Huang added that he had met the couple during house visits, and they were "well-integrated" in the estate.

Neighbour paid respect

Regarding the deceased man as a "friend", Lim bought some vegetarian food and offered it to the couple after learning about their passing, reported ST.

As theĀ couple were Buddhists, Lim also placed joss sticks on both sides of their flat's gate and prayed for them.

He shared with ST that he believes he is in the same position as the late couple, as he also lives alone and does not know when death will come knocking.
