PHV driver, 38, dies after car crash along Joo Chiat Road, allegedly had heart attack

A 38-year-old's car hit the vehicle in front of him along Joo Chiat Road on Sep. 2.

He was found unconscious in the driver's seat, and a passerby performed CPR on him before paramedics arrived, Shin Min Daily News reported.

What happened

The incident happened at about 11am along the stretch of Joo Chiat Road towards Marine Parade Central.

The reader who alerted Shin Min, Hong, said he was passing by when he saw the two cars.

According to Shin Min, one of the drivers appeared to have suffered a heart attack and was unconscious.

When Shin Min reporters arrived, they found a red Nissan Qashqai and a grey Mazda bearing a private hire vehicle sticker.

The Mazda's bumper had come off, its lights were smashed, and car parts were scattered across the road.

"He was just sitting motionless in the driver's seat"

The driver of the Nissan car said he was on the way to work when he felt his car being hit from behind. He got out to check and found the Mazda driver unresponsive.

He said: “He just sat there motionless in the driver's seat. Someone rushed over to perform CPR on him, and the paramedics took over as soon as they arrived."

He was placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

What the authorities said

SCDF said it was alerted to a road traffic accident along Joo Chiat Road at about 11am, and took one person to Changi General Hospital.

In response to Mothership's queries, the police said they were alerted at 11am on Sep. 2 to an accident involving two cars along Joo Chiat Road towards Marine Parade Central.

A 38-year-old male driver was taken to the hospital unconscious, where he subsequently died. Investigations are ongoing.
