Man, 36, gets drunk, doesn't pay for porridge at Orchard Plaza, harasses police officers, gets S$3,000 fine

A 36-year-old man was fined S$3,000 for harassing police officers while drunk after he refused to pay for porridge at Orchard Plaza.

Wu Guojie (transliterated) faced one charge under the Protection from Harassment Act and another charge under the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act.

He pleaded guilty to one of the charges, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The remaining charge was taken into consideration during sentencing.

Porridge

On Dec. 9. 2025, at about 7am, at Orchard Plaza, a female stall holder approached police officers on duty to inform them that the accused had ordered a bowl of porridge at her stall but refused to pay.

Two officers then asked the man to produce identification, but he failed to comply.

One of the officers attempted to reason with him.

However, he was intoxicated at the time of the offence and proceeded to shout and behave rudely.

He reportedly challenged the officers to arrest him, and he was arrested.

Escorted

While being escorted to Woodlands Police Division Headquarters, the accused muttered words and made offensive remarks in the police vehicle.

"You better watch out, my people don't want to see you in public," he reportedly said.

When an officer asked if he was threatening him, the accused immediately hurled vulgarities.

Alcohol

Test results from the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) revealed that the accused's blood sample contained 168 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

He was apparently going through divorce proceedings, ending an eight-year marriage.

He was also facing financial difficulties.

He claimed that he had turned to alcohol to drown his sorrows and had committed the offence due to excessive drinking.

He pleaded for leniency.
