Malaysia aspires to host the World Cup one day, Malaysia deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on Jul. 20 during the final between Spain and Argentina, New Straits Times reported.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said he hoped to see Malaysia compete in the world's biggest football tournament as Southeast Asia's representative.
"God willing, one day, we aspire for Malaysia to host the World Cup," he said in the early hours of Monday at Bangi Square 2, where the match was being screened.
"Hopefully, by then, the Malaysian team will be among the World Cup participants representing Southeast Asia," he said.
Malaysia is currently 136th in the latest Fifa world rankings.
