An Indonesian domestic helper who fell in love with a Singaporean man while working here has been sentenced to two months' jail after marrying him despite already being married with six children back home, according to Stomp, citing Shin Min Daily News.
Aminan Sidauruk, 51, pleaded guilty to one count of bigamy, with a second charge of falsely declaring she was unmarried taken into consideration during sentencing.
Already married since 1992
According to Stomp, Aminan had wed a man in a Catholic ceremony in Indonesia on Aug. 6, 1992. The marriage was never dissolved.
She left Indonesia between 2010 and 2012 to work overseas, leaving her six children behind in her husband's care.
Met Singaporean man online
In early 2025, while working as a domestic helper in Singapore, Aminan met a Singaporean man online. The two developed a relationship and decided to get married.
On Jul. 25, 2025, the Singaporean submitted a marriage application to the Registry of Marriages (ROM), declaring Aminan was single despite knowing she was already married.
On Sept. 2, 2025, the couple appeared before ROM to make a statutory declaration, with Aminan claiming she had never been married. Their marriage was officially registered on Oct. 27, 2025.
Tip-off led to arrest
Police received a tip-off from ROM that Aminan might have committed bigamy. She was arrested on Apr. 15, 2026, following investigations, per Shin Min.
Prosecution vs defence
According to Stomp, Prosecutors sought three to four months' jail, arguing Aminan's actions had caused harm to her husband and six children in Indonesia.
They also noted she had repeatedly misrepresented her marital status in both the marriage application and the statutory declaration, suggesting the offence was premeditated.
The defence, however, requested one to two months' jail, saying Aminan had registered the marriage out of genuine love for the Singaporean man, that the marriage lasted only a few months, and that she had acknowledged her wrongdoing and pleaded guilty.
