2 S’porean men, both aged 38, carry out 1st community service for littering in M'sia

The offence involved throwing cigarette butts in a public area at the entrance of KSL City Mall.

Two Singaporean men charged with littering were among 20 offenders ordered to carry out community service in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The two-hour community service session took place on Apr. 30 and began at about 9am, New Strait Times reported.

Community service

The session was conducted at the Jalan Pulai Bestari 7 Recreational Park in Skudai, according to Johor Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp).

Supervision of enforcement officers was present.

The Singaporeans, Edmund Lim Hu Shen and Tan Boon Haw, both 38, were fined RM1,000 (S$322.95) each and ordered to perform six hours of community service for littering in a public place.

The offence involved throwing cigarette butts in a public area instead of into a waste bin, which was committed at the entrance of KSL City Mall at about 11am on Jan. 3.

Lim and Tan are the first Singaporeans to be charged under littering laws in Malaysia.

The two men were sentenced on Apr. 7.

Under the supervision of enforcement officers, the men swept up dead leaves in the park and ended their service at about 11am.

Community service must be completed within 6 months

In accordance with the court order, the remaining hours of the men’s community service must be completed within six months.

The offenders, aged between 19 and 63, performed mandatory community service after being convicted of throwing small litter in public.

They comprised 13 Malaysians, one Nepali, one Bangladeshi and the two Singaporeans.

17 Singaporeans issued notices of offence

The offences mainly involved littering in public areas, including discarding cigarette butts, plastic waste, and drink cans.

In Johor, 822 offence notification notices have been issued, involving 457 Malaysians and 365 foreigners.

A total of 17 Singaporeans have been issued notices of offence, AsiaOne reported.

A total of 26 such offences have been prosecuted in court, resulting in fines totalling RM21,300 (S$6,879) and community service orders ranging from two to 10 hours for each offender.
