M'sia boy, 15, pleads not guilty to murder of girl, 16, in fatal school stabbing
His lawyer said he "appeared calm" during the hearing.
A 15-year-old student pleaded not guilty on Feb. 12 to the murder of his 16-year-old schoolmate in Selangor, Malaysia.
The victim, Yap Shing Xuen, was allegedly stabbed with a knife by the boy in their school toilet on Oct. 14.
Pleaded not guilty
According to The New Straits Times, the teenager cannot be publicly identified or photographed due to his age.
He was brought to Malaysia's High Court for the first time from the Puncak Alam Correction Centre, a detention centre for juveniles.
The teenager entered his plea after the charge was read out in Mandarin.
According to the charge sheet, he is accused of murdering Yap in the girls' toilet of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, between 9:20am and 9:35am on Oct. 14.
If convicted, he can get the death penalty, or a jail term of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, and 12 strokes of the rotan.
Remained calm
The teenager's defence lawyer told the media that he "appeared calm" as he stood outside the dock.
"He went to the microphone and told the court that he wanted to go on trial. It is the same charge sheet (as read out at the magistrate's court). There were no changes in the particulars, and the consent to prosecute was tendered to the court," he said.
The lawyer further said that the boy "understood what was going on in court" and that he is receiving continuous monthly psychiatric treatment and "showing good progress".
The trial is expected to take place in July for two consecutive weeks.
