Man allegedly leaves unpaid S$234 bill at Tai Seng pub, said he urgently needed the toilet
Vanishing act.
A man allegedly left an unpaid S$234 bill at a Tai Seng pub after informing staff that urgently needed the restroom at closing time.
The pub owner, Guowei stated his establishment, Enjoy Bar, in Commerze@Irving was subjected to the vanishing act on Jan. 3.
Responding to Mothership's queries, Guowei stated that the patron who identified himself as Desmond, entered the bar alone.
As the bar was full, he joined a table with another customer, a stranger who he was not acquainted with.
Ordered three buckets of beer & a 'ladies drink'
Desmond started with one bucket of beer before calling for an additional bucket, as he was informed that there was a promotional price of S$88 for two, Guowei shared.
The patrons seemed at ease, playing card and drinking games with a server.
As a tip to the waitress, the bar offered a S$100 "ladies drink" which Desmond and the stranger both ordered.
As the bar was closing and bills were getting settled, Desmond ordered for a third beer bucket at S$46 to be served.
"He told us he urgently needed to visit the gents' and we gave him the benefit of doubt.
After some time, we went to the gents' to check on him and he was totally gone."
Stranger offered to foot the bill on Desmond's behalf
The other customer offered to pay Desmond's bill of S$234, but Guowei rejected that offer.
Citing that they were a newly opened pub, Guowei stated that they felt "a bit disappointed that we chose to trust patrons but were unfairly treated".
"We didn't get customers to pay when they order because we have promos and don't want customers to feel obliged to order more for the promos. We keep our customers' interests at heart."
The bar does not plan to file a police report and stated that they just wanted to inform other pub owners to watch out.
"Just wanna create awareness for pub owners to look out for this person.
Might not be his first time and probably wouldn’t be his last."
