Popeyes Singapore has suspended its limited-edition Poppy Fish Burger at all outlets after a customer found mould in her burger bun at the chain's Orchard Xchange outlet.

This was done as a precaution while investigations are ongoing, the chain said.

In a Nov. 20 statement, the chain said it sincerely apologises for the incident.

"Food safety is our highest priority and we take this matter seriously," it said.

It added that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has completed its inspection and confirmed that its food safety controls are in order.

Popeyes Singapore is now working with SFA, its suppliers, and its ops team to identify the root cause and ensure a similar incident does not occur again.

Mouldy bun

A Mothership reader, Teng, said that she had ordered the Poppy Fish Burger at the Popeyes Orchard Xchange outlet on Nov. 18.

She'd eaten most of the burger when she noticed that part of the bun was mouldy.

Teng said she initially didn't notice it because she was looking at her computer screen while eating.

She subsequently threw away the rest of the burger and lodged complaints with Popeyes and SFA.

Outlet inspected

In response to her complaint, SFA confirmed that it had inspected the outlet.

The management was "sternly warned" to step up their procedures, and the agency said it would continue to monitor them for complaince.

Popeyes told Mothership it would review its internal procedures to understand how this occurred and prevent future incidents.

In its most recent statement, it said that it has since initiated a full inspection of all food items, engaged suppliers to conduct checks on shelf-life integrity, and reinforced food safety checks across all Popeyes Singapore outlets.

It has also received recommendations from SFA, which it will implement "immediately".

"We remain firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and product quality across all our outlets in Singapore.
